Abstract. The experiment was conducted on glasshouse carnation. Plants were cultivated in rockwool, sand and sand with perlite. The system used was a fertigation without recirculation. A vegetation period was 7 months. All media were fertilized using the same method. There were significant differences in yield of plants cultivated in sand, sand with perlite and rockwool media.

The usefulness of inert media in growing of glasshouse carnation

Summary

The experiment had been conducted of glasshouse carnation. Plants were cultivated in rockwool, sand and sand with perlite. The system used was a fertigation without recirculation. A vegetation period was 7 moths. All media were fertilized using the same method.

The number of flowers in both cultivars of glasshouse carnation that were cultivated on the rockwool was significantly lager. Furthermore, the results indicate that plants cultivated in inert media ‘Dover’ had better usage than those cultivated on inert media ‘Domingo’. Moreover, the concentration of nutrient components in root environment of plants cultivated on sand and sand with perlite was lower comparing to carnations that grown on rockwool.
